The essential purpose of a professional association is to provide both collective and individual member support and services not possible otherwise.For organizational and collective bargaining purposes the Board of Education of the Anne Arundel County Public Schools classifies employees with similar levels of responsibility and job functions into "Units." Unit 2 is composed of building administrators and instructional and curricular coordinators, supervisors and other specified personnel. The Association of Educational Leaders represents Unit 2 in collective bargaining and in the administration of its contract with the Board of Education.

Some activities of AEL are carried out on behalf of all Unit 2 employees.
Others benefit AEL members exclusively.

In the end AEL's ultimate objective is to serve as the voice for educational leadership in every forum to:

• 01.  Establish conditions viewed as important for maximizing academic achievement and opportunity for every child,
• 02.   Protect those conditions
• 03.  Look beyond collective professional needs to members' individual personal protections and enhancements.
